Wash, Wax, and Clean the Boat

Before you can put your boat in storage for the off-season, you’ll need to give it a deep cleaning. Start by washing both the interior and exterior of your boat. Pay close attention to the smaller spots between the seats and the crevices. After the boat is completely dry, apply a protective coating of wax.

Change the Oil

You may want to do a quick inspection and see if the oil is still good. Any water or acids that might have gotten into the oil can corrode the engine. If the oil is sludgy, it will have to be changed. Make sure to replace the oil filter at the same time!

Empty and Flush the Coolant

Flush the cooling system with fresh water so that no particles damage your engine. First, drain out the coolant, and then flush it out with fresh water. After that, you can refill it with antifreeze.

Add Fuel Stabilizer

The fuel in your tank will go bad after about a month in storage. You can solve this issue by adding a fuel stabilizer. Confirm that your tank is full, add the stabilizer, then run the engine for a few minutes so that the stabilizer reaches all parts of the machine.

Lubricate Moving Parts

Use a light coat of lubricant to put over all the moving parts, such as cabinets, hinges, and storage areas. Even though the boat is being stored away from the rain, water can still get in, and the lubrication will stop moisture from corroding your vessel.

Cover and Store

It’s important to keep your boat in a storage area with as little moisture as possible. Place a breathable cover over your boat to protect it from anything harmful, while still allowing airflow. If you store the boat outside, check it regularly to remove any debris from the cover.
