It’s not easy keeping mold and mildew off a boat! To help you keep your craft in tip-top shape, we’ve written this helpful guide on removing mildew. If you’re in need of any of the supplies listed below, feel free to visit our helpful parts department in Norwich, Connecticut.

Tools

If you’ve found mildew on your boat’s seats, carpets, rugs, or wood, you’ll want to act fast! Start by gathering a few soft towels, a scrub brush, and a mild cleanser. Feel free to grab a mildew remover for boats from your nearest store, or create your own by combining one part white vinegar and one part distilled water. If you’re cleaning boat seats, you might also want to grab a magic eraser for those stuck on stains.

Cleaning

To start, simply spray on your cleanser and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes (or however long your bottle recommends). Next, use your scrub brush to carefully remove the mold. Keep applying the cleanser to the mildew and using your scrub brush till it’s completely disappeared. Afterward, be sure to dry the area with your towels.

Prevention

To prevent the appearance of mildew on your boat, do your best to let it dry completely before placing it in storage or covering it with canvas. While seats can be quickly wiped down after each use, wooden and carpeted areas will need time to dry. You might also invest in a vinyl protectant and wood sealant to keep mildew from appearing on your boat in the future.
