Fiberglass boats require a slightly different cleaning approach than standard boats. After all, they come with a unique outer surface resin known as gelcoat. This material helps protect the hull and delivers a reflective shine, but can get dull and become easier to stain over time. Regular cleaning helps maintain the gelcoat and its appealing appearance, making it an important part of fiberglass boat upkeep.

Follow the below steps for efficiently washing a fiberglass boat. For more maintenance tips or to shop fiberglass boats for sale, visit Thayer's Marine. Our dealership is located in Norwich, Connecticut, and we also serve those in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Rinse

Start by giving the fiberglass boat a good rinse. This will help remove any loose debris and dust.

Add Suds

Pour water and a boat cleaning soap into a bucket, then mix it well. Use a long-handled soft brush or sponge to scrub the fiberglass boat exterior. Try to remove all caked-on gunk.

Rinse Again

Starting at the top and working down, do another rinse. Remove all soap and debris.

Dry

It's important to dry your fiberglass boat after washing it. Otherwise, moisture can build up and lead to mildew growth.

If you notice mildew stains starting to surface, apply a mildew stain remover.

Degrease

The fiberglass boat's gelcoat needs to be free of oil and grease, but soap alone usually won't cut it. That's why a degreasing product is key.

There are two key options. First, a non-scratching degreasing formula. Apply it across the surface of the fiberglass boat's gelcoat with a damp cloth. Then, rub it off with a microfiber towel. Second, a spray-on-and-rinse-off degreaser product. Either way, be sure to let the fiberglass boat dry before continuing onto the next step.

Polish

A quality polish will be an abrasive substance that helps smooth out the fiberglass boat's gelcoat surface. Apply the polish onto a damp foam polishing pad or a soft cloth. Then, use a circular motion to rub it onto the gelcoat surface. Target small areas at a time to ensure you cover everything.

If you want to speed this step up, use a low-speed circular electric buffer with compounding and buffing pads.

Once you have finished polishing the fiberglass boat's gelcoat, take a microfiber towel and wipe down the vessel.

Wax

Waxing helps add a protective coating and can improve the fiberglass boat's gloss. Apply the wax according to the product instructions, wait for it to have a hazy appearance, then wipe away excess residue with a soft cloth. Then, step back and enjoy your fiberglass boat’s beautiful appearance!
